That depends, for gamers you see there are two types, those who must have every game, and those who are quite happy with the ones available for linux. although the problem is, hardly any of the non-free games released use the package management system. So while everything else is as easy as click-clunk, games are much harder to install. Shame really since I think gamers are some of the early adopters along with porn studios.

what are you using? I'm personally working on Syncing support on ubuntu.

Actually, it's my eventual plan to ditch everything Microsoft and go entirely Open Source, with Linux as my OS. I'm actually not all that far from that goal. It's mostly just a few really critical apps that are holding me back, and I've got plans in place to replace those when I have time.

It's not exactly the best option for my sister-in-law, though, especially with the massive stack of Windows-only games my nephew has. That said, I did have my parents running Fedora once on a borrowed machine of mine when their desktop died. They were able to function fairly well using the Mozilla suite (which they were already using on the Windows box anyway) and OpenOffice. But that's all they used it for: Internet and office tools,

Why do I have the sneaking suspicion that this post was at least a partial inspiration for the UAC segment of this week's Jesus Geek? ;) Regardless of whether that statement is true, thanks for the additional info, John.

Limax: It doesn't matter to me what you run, so long as you're happy with it. As for the youngin's taking away your computer time... I know how you feel. :)

John: Thanks for the notes and links. Yeah, I've heard of Astaro plenty of times on SN! so I'm considering it as a possibility, provided I have a spare beige box to install it on. (Haven't priced the non-free boxes.) My router has some built-in access controls and I've looked at a few FLOSS options (Dan's Guardian, etc.), so I've still got plenty of research to do. I'm mostly looking at suggestions for my S-I-L right now, who is a self-described "computer blond" and not keen on the idea of something requiring a lot of extra work.

Jeff,

Turn off user account control when you're making changes and then re-enable it when you're done. Check out http://tinyurl.com/2d474a for various methods of doing this.

I'd also recommend two things for parental controls.

Astaro security gateway or the iBoss. Both of these can sit between your cable modem and router and block anyone who's connected. it doesn't run on your computer so there's no software to slow down your machine.

I'm sure you know about Astaro since you listen to Security Now! but if you want to hear an interview with the CEO of Phantom Technologies check out http://geeksandgod.com/iboss-interview

I've actually been using Vista since March, when I got my new laptop. However, I haven't really had much "time" to tweak it. So, I'm still using their security model that it came with. Not what you wanted to hear, but I don't spend as much time with computers as I used to at home. The kids take precedence.
