Two updates in one day; imagine that. Unfortunately, this one doesn’t have the happy ending of the previous one.
Try as I might, it’s starting to look like there won’t be any new GPFs in October. I’ve actually made progress with the strip, getting a number of weeks scripted (including the fates of “Nega” Nick and “Nega” Ki and we actually get to see the Gamester (gasp) doing something other than standing around and grimacing), a full week drawn (using the old seven-days-a-week reckoning), and half a week completely finished and ready to upload. However, all that work took over two weeks to complete, including the Labor Day holiday weekend. That’s nowhere near a sustainable schedule, and as I stated in the last GPF News post, I won’t start updating again until I can either build a buffer and sustain it or finish To Thine Own Self…, whichever comes first. Thus, my target end date for the current hiatus will be moved from October 2nd to November 6th (the first Monday in November). As promised, there will be a News update on October 2nd stating as much, but I thought I’d give those of you who visit her occasionally the initial heads-up.
It’s been good working on the strip again, but with wild events like Ben’s surgery interrupting things, it’s getting really hard to come up with any sort of predictability.

I had an interesting little surprise a week or so ago. I had recently come back to North Carolina after a week on the new job and was spending a lot of my “free” time cleaning and repairing things in an effort to make the house more presentable and sellable. Unfortunately, this meant a lot of yard work, something I’m not known for being very good at. I’m fine when it comes to mowing the lawn (not that I’m an expert at it, nor that I necessarily enjoy it, but at least I’m competent), but just about anything else involving chlorophyll is foreign to me. However, I’ve recently successfully planted flowers, spread mulch, and cleared over a foot of clearance between our overgrown bushes and the front of the house. All in all, not bad for a gardening newbie.
One day, I stepped outside for a reason that now escapes me. As I was walking past the front planter along the walk to the front door, something bright yellow caught my eye. I looked down to find the interesting blob you see above. While I had a sneaking suspicion of what it was, I knew I couldn’t be certain. I rushed back inside, grabbed the camera, and snapped a few photos to take back to my biology teacher mother when I returned to West Virginia. Sure enough, she confirmed exactly what I suspected: it was an honest-to-gosh slime mold.
When one of your main characters is a slime mold, you tend to get a lot of slime mold related mail. I’ve had fans send me tons of unsolicited photos, hyperlinks, and amusing mold-related anecdotes over the years. Needless to say, when the news hit SlashDot back in February of a robot controlled by a slime mold, I was inundated. But I’ll have to admit that my actual personal slime mold experience is relatively small. Other than the above snapshot and a chance meeting on a hike during a recent vacation, my path has rarely crossed with any slimes of note.
Sadly, this chance meeting would not be repeated. By the following morning, the little mold had been baked thoroughly by the scorching NC summer sun and formed a crusty, hardened shell. When the shell broke, a fine black mist of spores rose into the air, carried away by the breeze. As far as I know, the mold never showed any signs of sapience, but I conveniently neglected to tell my Fred plush doll the news of the encounter, just in case it would have broken his heart… er, nucleus.
As far as I know, it isn’t taboo to announce this, but if it is, this post may disappear suddenly.
I’m currently scheduled to appear as the guest in the next (February 13th) KeenCAST, Keenspot’s new weekly podcast. I’ll make sure to make an announcement in the GPF News Monday once it goes live, but here’s a heads-up for those who pay attention.
For those who don’t know what a podcast is (and yes, there are people who don’t), not to worry. You don’t need an iPod to listen to it. A podcast is just an MP3 with a catchy name and a (hopefully) regular update schedule. Check out the previous episodes of the KeenCAST to get an idea of what to expect.
UPDATE: Well, it’s official now. The hosts are currently phishing for questions, so if you have any, make sure to go to the KeenCAST forum and let them know.
ANOTHER UPDATE: Due to unforeseen circumstances, my appearance on KeenCAST has been somewhat delayed. I’m tentatively re-scheduled to appear on February 27th. You may continue to post questions to the forum thread if you want.
YET ANOTHER UPDATE: Aaaand… it’s up.
I’m back. You know, my very first con ever–as a guest and as an attendee–was Dragon*Con 2000. Ever since then, Dragon*Con has been one of my favorites. They treat their guests like gold, they’ve always be helpful when something goes wrong, and there’s just so much to do. While Comic-Con International out is San Diego is bigger and has more stuff, it’s far too easy to get lost in the ocean of people. I made more money at Dragon*Con than I did at Comic-Con this year; I even almost broke even. (Cons are always a financial loss for me, or at least a long-term investment to gain new readers.)
The con report is in progress. I’ve got all the pictures up except for the shots from the panel, which I need to get some frame grabs from the video for that. The video footage has been digitized, and it will probably take me a week or so before I can get the ConCam stuff online. Unfortunately, we have a major deployment at the day job this weekend, so it may take a bit longer to get things up than I had hoped.
This entry is a special one, I suppose. I am typing this on my Palm, sitting in a cramped seat on a 757 in flight to San Diego. Obviously, I’m not posting from the plane, as I can’t get the Internet up here, but I am typing from there. Really. Honest.
I spent a good chunk of my four hours in the air actually working on comics. Yeah, my buffer carries me through Comic-Con and beyond, but I still don’t want to fall behind. Unfortunately, I didn’t achieve my best results. I didn’t have room to pull out the Wacom, so I had to use the blasted TrackPoint. My index finger still hurts. And the guy in front of me had his seat back down the entire time, so I couldn’t open my ThinkPad’s screen all the way. I had to crane my neck at an odd angle just to see. That has to be the first time I’ve ever thought of that nice 17″ screen as a detriment. But I did finish three dailies in flight, August 23-25, 2005. If they don’t turn out the best, I blame the guy in seat 36D on Delta 273.
I’m trying to make time to post at least something here each day. I tried to post something Friday, but it didn’t really go anywhere, and I was interrupted before I could finish the post. It wasn’t very interesting anyway, so I’ll sum it up in two sentences: If you’re a geek who wants not only to learn how to cook but just out-right learn, watch Good Eats. Alton Brown may know more about how to sauté than how to sudo, but he’s still a geek.
Now for the real reason for this post: As mentioned on the GPF site, I’ll be at Comic-Con International in San Diego, CA, July 14-17. It’s an expensive trip for us, but it’s well worth it. The title of this post says it all: it’s the comic book geek Mecca. 80,000+ people will converge on San Diego to buy stuff, talk comics (as well as lots of other popular arts stuff, like movies and TV), and meet their favorite creators and artists. I’ll be there with Keenspot, promoting the network and GPF. I’ll also be going for the meet-and-greet aspect as well, to see other online cartoonists, gawk at celebrities, and be a total fanboy myself.
For specifics on GPF@CCI, check out the GPF Comic-Con 2005 Pre-Con Report. This page will have all the details about where I’ll be when and what merchandise I’ll be bringing. I’ll update that page as frequently as I can get information, so if you’re planning to go and you’re interested in GPF and/or Keenspot activities, that’s the place to look. I’ll also try very hard to update it at least daily during the con with up-to-the-minute changes.
While I’m at it, I’ll also mention that I’ll be at Dragon*Con in Atlanta, GA, on September 2-5. It has its own pre-con report, so if that’s a closer con for you than CCI, you might want to give it a try.
